Nathaniel Smith was credited for the name of nearby Cuffey's Cove in the early days when Australian African-Americans were called "cuffeys." When an Australian whaling crew, taking on provisions at the Cove, saw Nat Smith, they called it "Cuffey's" and the name has remained ever since.
